Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
